THE KARMA YOGA PROJECT
Supporting the Community in Times of Crisis
The Karma Yoga Project is an initiative we dreamt prior to when the Covid pandemic hit. We wanted to offer vulnerable people across our communities the chance to take advantage of the benefits of yoga, meditation and the supportive community of people these age-old practices tend to gather.
When the first lockdown hit, we were able to offer people in financial hardship the opportunity to keep up with these practices for free, foe the sake of being able to stay on top of their mental health needs. Since then, we have delivered 50+ hours of free online yoga to Wirral residents as well as free mindfulness support to local single parents.
The need for this extra support is growing. We’ve seen a three-fold increase in anxiety and depression across the UK, and there is growing concern amongst public health experts of an increase in self-harm and suicide rates. Several parts of Wirral already contain the highest rates of depression in the entire county.
Times like these require us to pull together as a community, to show compassion and support towards our most vulnerable.
We are asking for the support of the community and local businesses to meet this growing demand and to get more free mindfulness and yoga-based support to those who need it most. We’ve also made several funding applications in a bid to recruit Karma Yoga volunteers, to offer more personalised support at this exceptionally challenging time.
